Topic: P30 with 454 oil capacity

Posted By: spize909 on 09/24/10 09:38pm

I have a 1993 Fleetwood with a 454 in it and was wondering if by chance somebody could tell me what the oil cap is. I've always taken it in to have it done but would rather save the money this time.
Thanks!

It obviously has a dipstick right???? Start with 6 quarts and check it, it will be around 6 or 7.

My 1984 with the 454 took 7qts with filter change, not sure about the later model 454's.

Yeah......it's about 5' long and all spindly. Hard to get a good read on it the way it corkscrews through the tube... and I don't totally trust it.

I put in 7 with filter. Just bought a new dipstick and tube as I could not get a reading on the old one.

Chevy says:

Drain oil. Pour in 5 quarts and wait for draindown. Check dipstick. The oil should be up to the ADD line. Add another quart. Wait. The oil should be at the FULL line.

After the filter is replaced, run engine, wait, and add oil until the level is up to the FULL line. How much you add will depend on the filter you use, but will be a quart or less. I like to fill the filter almost full before screwing it on. This just shortens the run time to full oil pressure.

PM me with E mail addy for your own copy of Chevy manual page.

My manual says 7 with filter change. I put in 6 1/2 let it run for a bit shut down then clean up and then check oil level. I know the dip stick is a pita but.....

Our '94 Fleetwood was a '93 chassis and engine and the 454 took 7 quarts with filter like the others.

OK....what viscosity do you recommend? Odometer says 27K or so but it only works when it want to (speedo works fine). The seller said nothing about the faulty odometer except that it had low miles. Must have stopped working right just after I bought it.

I'm thinking 10-40 but I do like the Shell Rotella 15-40. I run it in my toys and it's a good oil....even after loosing the zinc.

I'm testing "Delo 400LE 15-40" with 1300 PPM of "ZDDP" which is fine for the cams.

So far driving around town the oil pressure is very stabil (39 psi) at idle and (49-50) running at the lower RPMs....

For now it's replacing "Royal purple 15-40" and can be purchased (cheaply) at Walmart..

So the Delo still has the zinc......in California? I don't think we really need it for our motorhomes so much but I know I need it for my VW powered sand rail. I'm going to have to check into that.
